Carnival arrives in Puerto de la Cruz to fill the city with color and the lively rhythms of the comparsas and murgas.
If you visit the city in February, don’t forget to put on your best costume and take to the streets to enjoy a party where the good atmosphere is guaranteed.
There are many events planned for these days, so to make sure you don’t get lost among all the festivities, here are some of the ones you shouldn’t miss.
Among the extensive carnival agenda there is an activity that is becoming increasingly popular every passing year. Head out into the streets ready to have fun in the most popular obstacle course of the year: ‘Mascarita ponte Tacón’. A crazy men’s competition in which the participants take to the cobbled streets of the city center in dizzying heels. Laughs are guaranteed.
Another event that will not leave you indifferent is the ‘Mataculebra’ or ‘Matar la culebra’, a carnival tradition of Afro-Cuban origin that has survived in Puerto de la Cruz as a tradition and has become one of the favorite activities of the city’s schools, who are in charge of staging this magical ritual.
Each year, ‘Coso Apoteosis del Carnaval’ puts the icing on the cake for these festivities. The parade, featuring decorated floats, comparsas, murgas, choreographic groups and even foreign delegations, invades the city center to get everyone dancing in a magical atmosphere filled with illusion and fantasy.
Remember that these festivities do not just take place in February. If you visit the city in September, you can experience all the color of the Summer Carnival, when the city chooses its Carnival King.
