A more than healthy climate

A more than healthy climate

Due to its location near the Tropic of Cancer, the influence of the Alisios winds and the sea, Puerto de la Cruz enjoys average yearly temperatures of 20ºC – a few degrees lower than other coastal areas on the island. According to the statistics, Puerto de la Cruz is blessed with 3,000 hours of sunlight a year, 60% humidity and only 75 days of rainfall.

Going for a leisurely stroll, taking in the seaside, and the opportunity to do sport outdoors is a must no matter what the season. Thanks to its unique climate, the city plays host to many cultural events and goings on in its pretty streets and squares all year round.

You can live outdoors all year round, bathing in the sea, eating on a terrace, playing sports or enjoying a concert in the street.

The climate and the beautiful scenery was also what caught the eye of the first European travellers to the island at the start of the 21st century. The British Medical Association would recommend spending time in Puerto, during the spa season at Hotel-Casino Taoro in particular. This was what triggered the transformation of this small municipality in the north of Tenerife into the birthplace of tourism in the Canary Islands.

In the Orotava Valley something extraordinary happens. There are two seas. One is formed by clouds and the other is of salt water.

The natural beauty of Puerto de la Cruz and La Orotava Valley is breathtaking and captures your senses as soon as you lay eyes on it. And the sea of clouds? This natural phenomenon exists thanks to the Alisios winds that push the clouds against the mountainsides and gives the effect of a calm undulating the sea from the mountaintops.

→ Planning a trip? Even though the temperature is generally pleasant, it can drop significantly at nighttime and can even be overcast first thing in the morning. You might get a few drops of rain in winter too. This is a beauty of Tenerife’s unique weather system – think of it as a miniature continent – where you can find different microclimates. Pack your suitcase with the weather in mind and expect to be joking about under rain in the mountains one minute and recovering on a beach in the sun and sea the next.
